PostSubject: Talking Heads   Sat 19 Apr 2008, 02:09

Me and my friend have started working our way through Talking Heads' material, having been introduced to the New Wave thang by the 80s' incarnation of King Crimson. Have to say I'm really loving it myself, David Byrne is an absolute nutter, in a veery entertaining way! I'm most into the debut album at the moment, it has Pyscho Killer which I already knew as do most people, but it also contains the multi-part No Compassion which I'm thoroughly in love with.

What an ugly album cover. Razz

Never really got on with Talking Heads. They are one of those bands where I can appreciate the quality and enjoy hearing them now and again but don't need to actually own any of their music. Does that make sense?

Someone clearly spent a lot of time an effort designing that album cover...

I'm quite excited about entering the Fear of Music/Remain in Light phase, what with the presence of Eno and Adrian Belew, and just the general aura of greatness around them.

Their first 4 albums are all in 1001 Albums to Hear Before You Die, so I've got my hopes high for these next to - at least as good as the first two I'm hoping! Smile

Oh and Dabamash you'll love this one too then

I do like that Fear of Music cover, though; it suits the title and theme, like.

Listened to Fear of Music for the first time today - very, very cool. Can't wait to hear Remain in Light now - and to listen to it all again. This band is very exciting!

Topaz, you say you're a fan - could you recommend anymore 'New Wave' artists to me? I was thinking about going after The Police. But dare I investigate Blondie? There's always The Cure... what d'you think?

Talking Heads saved me from total annoyance after walking out of the Badly Drawn Boy gig I was unfortunate enough to witness in 2000. I went home and put on my freshly acquired DVD of Stop Making Sense, and watched a band that showed me how a performance should be done. Spellbinding stuff.

Blondie, yes. Go for it.

Oh gosh, I was a HUGE fan of the Police. Still am!

Also LOVE Gary Numan...check him out. I used to drive my mom crazy dancing around the dining room table with the meat pounder held as a microphone.

Hmm...who else did I dig back in the day? Thompson Twins, Billy Idol...can't think of any more right now.

But it was a strange mix. Oh yeah! Neil Young, ACDC..the list goes on. Gawd, I was rather bipolar.

Thanks Dabamash. It's taking forever though.

Unlike Topaz I'm going to tell you to be wary of Blondie and The Police. They're very much poppier (IMO) than the rather more intelligent Talking Heads.

Definitely go for The Cure though. Excellent stuff. Try Joy Division (precursors of New Order) and although maybe not strictly New Wave, The Smiths.

If you want something more ethereal, head off in the direction of The Cocteau Twins (not to be confused with the naff pop of The Thompson Twins). Treasure and Victorialand are stunning. Heaven or Las Vegas is more approachable.

Early Simple Minds (New Gold Dream and Sparkle in the Rain especially. Possibly Once Upon A Time which is their huge breakthrough album) are definitely worth a listen. Anything later than that is pretty ropey.

I'd suggest having a look at Depeche Mode and possibly Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark. Theres a long list of New Wave bands on Wiki HERE but most are dreadful '80's pop bands rather than New Wave as such.

HTH.

Not back in the day they weren't!

Not poppy at all. Groundbreaking as a matter of fact. They were brilliant. Definitely check out their earlier stuff.

Agree with also checking out The Cure, Depeche Mode, and Simple Minds. Some more of my faves.

How old are you Hotblack?

Smile Can we agree to disagree Smile .
I'll admit their respective first albums had something but after that I (personaly) thought they were rather too commercial (at least for my tastes anyway) Very Happy

Sorry Topaz. I missed your question first time around.
I was most definitely there. Smile If I admit to being 44 ( Sad Where did the years go) will that convince you?

I am, of course, too much of a gentleman to ask you how old you are. One never asks ladies their age. Its rude don't you know!!! Wink

Eh, I'm a bit less than you. But not much!

It's hard to imagine that anyone didn't find the Police and Blondie fascinating at that time. It's funny how something thrilling to one person can be meh to another.

I just remember discovering their music, and it was one of the most exciting times I can remember(musically, of course...haha).

I was heavily in to rock and prog. New Wave (at the time) was anathema to me. I loathed it.* I have since learnt the error of my ways and can tolerate the quality end of the genre Laughing

* Growing up in Manchester you were either a punk, a hippy, a New Romantic etc. The genres were not allowed to be mixed, unlike today when you are allowed to like anything and everything (thankfully) (unless you're an emo.... at which point you hate everything....including yourself)
