Was a bit of a sour-faced article from a writer I usually admire at the following site:

http://www.musicradar.com/news/guitars/ivor-novello-awards-fail-to-surprise-207697

Sent the following response in the hope that young Mr Rogerson revises his opinion

Quote :
Hi Ben

Admired your work when Deputy Ed for Computer Music and have been impressed with recent stuff for Musicradar (in particular Propellerhead Record video).

However, was surprised at the slightly dismissive tone in your article on Ivor Novello awards. Whilst I couldn’t care less about Coldplay or Duffy, I strongly believe Elbow deserve their moment in the sun. Their album Seldom Seen Kid has garnered many plaudits and awards and rightly so. It doesn’t have a weak song on it and the ones recognised by the Ivor Novello’s are crackers. What’s more, they have proven (at least in my eyes) that they can walk the talk as well – saw them at Wembley earlier in the year and it’s one of my all time favourite gigs.

I know this probably seems like the rantings of a fan-boy but I was not aware of their music prior to their 2008 appearance on Later with Jools. Moreover, I’m too old (43) to be developing crushes, musical or otherwise, on any band. If it sounds good then that’ll do in my books.

They are an honest, unpretentious group who go about their business with a modicum of dignity and charm (how many can say that?). And they’ve been plugging away for donkey’s years … I wish ‘em well.

BTW there is a good interview with the band’s keyboard player and producer, Craig Potter in January’s edition of Tape Op. Talks about mixing 100% in the box in ProTools. Was quite surprised.

Right … am off to by my Elbow Speedos and an Eccles cake.

Keep up the good work young man … but don’t diss the ‘bow!!

Regards

Got to keep these journalist types in their place.

Makes a nice change to see their picture (albeit a fraction of the size of the one of Sophie Ellis-Bextor) in The Metro this morning. Shame they had to say Elbow swiped the award away from Nick Hemming. Elbow bashing (wasn't he one of the hobbits?) has begun!!!

Congratulation also to Vince Clarke. Seems like the Ivor Novellos are a bit slow at recognising talent.

Yeah, I've noticed that too - the press making it seem that Elbow jilted him out of it. I think the backlash is beginning....

I didn't read it that he was dissing Elbow as such - after all they have won a lot of awards this year Very Happy

Well done to the lads!

although at the risk of sounding churlish, ODLT is still my least favourite Elbow song

Really? Ben was good enough to email me back

This is part of the response I got ...

Quote :
My slightly jaded tone was simply reflective of the fact that they, Coldplay and Duffy seem to have received pretty much every award going for the past year, so it’s hard to get excited about the fact that they’ve all won another one (or, in Elbow’s case, another two).

I take your point, though.

He's actually a really good bloke, and if I'm honest I suppose I understand his boredom at yet another Elbow award. However, you don't get many albums like 'Seldom Seen Kid' come along and I believe they're good value for these awards. On the flip side, if their next one is a turkey I'll be the first to slag them off Embarassed

I don't think you are sounding churlish, Lee Spoons you are sounding honest.
For the song ODLT to be chosen of Elbow's music to be the best musically and lyrically I find amusing.

'Grounds for Divorce' as Contemporary category is worthy, of course.
Its so great they have finally been recognised so much this past year whatever the awards are for.
Does anyone know if any other bands in musical award history have received as many awards in succession in such a short space of time?

I've just seen this too - congratulations to the lads. :-D

However, really I've only just seen it because I'm not that bothered about awards. Don't get me wrong, I'm chuffed amd think it's wonderful that they're getting the recognition they deserve (though I echo Lee and LWD on what it's for Smile) - but Elbow and the likes of Duffy in the same breath?! Shocked I rest my case about awards.
