Great to find others who love Talk Talk !
We, too, have 'Spirit of Eden' and 'Laughing Stock' (and Mark Hollis' Solo Album) along with all the early Talk Talk material.
'Spirit of Eden' and 'Laughing Stock' are arguably the greatest 'pair' of Albums in our collection. Their minimalist haunting power and beauty are unrivalled. Maybe not everyone's 'cup of tea' , but to discerning listeners (like fans of Elbow, Yes, Genesis etc....!) they are just amazing.

Caron.

After watching the Southbank Show and hearing a snippet of Talk Talk, I'm gonna purchase 'Spirit Of Eden' then........all I've ever heard from them is the radio friendly 'Talk Talk' and 'It's My Life', which I thought were good but didn't make me want go out and search their back catalogue, but this was back in the day when posters of Mel and Kim and Debbie Gibson adorned my mid - teenage, bedroom walls !!

Hope it lives up to it's billing !!

There's a definite progression from the pop of the very first self titled Talk Talk to the minimalism of Laughing Stock. All have something to recommend but the last two (Laughing Stock and Spirit of Eden) are just beautiful, amazing and very uncommercial.

Agreed! Spirit of Eden is a great choice, MBV, and I hope you'll enjoy it! Very Happy But, ummmm...don't go around telling too many people about your old Debbie Gibson poster, 'kay? Wink

I saw Talk Talk supporting Peter Gabriel and Genesis at the Genesis reunion concert at Milton Keynes Bowl in 1982. Gabriel rejoined Genesis for a one off gig to raise money for WOMAD.

I remember Talk Talk were given a really hard time by the "Prog Rock" crowd for being a "Pop" band.

How wrong we were!

After reading some posts on this thread and having watched the SBS , I put on my only Talk Talk CD to date, "Natural History - Very best of"

I think I bought this when it first came out (yes I know !!!) , mainly for the classic "Life's what you make it" .I also quite liked the other earlier pop songs.

This is the sad part, I never really got to listen to the whole CD through, not recognising the other titles near the end and not knowing about their progression musically.

How I now regret it !! I have been missing out on some great music from their later years.

This is my kind of music and to find out nearly 20 years that I have been "missing out" is tough to take.

But as they say, better late than never.

I have just ordered their final three CDs and cant wait to check them out properly.

In the meantime, have been listening to the CD I have got , quite a lot !

I asked Mrs W what Mark Hollis was doing these days and she told me that he had "retired" from the music industry. I wonder what happened?

A short article in the The Grauniad HERE doesn't really say much more than he retired.

Great to meet you Emmanuel. Yes, there is a lot of appreciation for Talk Talk amongst Elbow fans. It's a big loss that Mark Hollis stopped making music when he did.

Sounds like you'd fit in well on the Last fm group too, looking at your other favourite bands! Smile

Wow, four years since the last post on this thread!

I was faffing about on YouTube before - as you do - and saw a link to this site about Talk Talk: http://users.cybercity.dk/~bcc11425/

No flashy graphics and videos as it says on their home page, but some interesting rarities and nice old interviews.

Well, it makes me happy that there is a thread that can be four years old!

But one thing that should have come up in those four years is an album that I played to death, and that is the tribute album http://spiritoftalktalk.com/the-cd/

The version of Renee by Black Submarine is just beautiful... http://youtu.be/h580PDd9aC8

Ooh, cheers MT; didn't know about the tribute CD.

And yes, amen to a thread that can be resurrected without batting an eyelid after such a long time Smile

This wee sampler from the tribute album is very purdy:

It's a belter, for sure. I heard about it when Turin Brakes said they were contributing to it.

I am sad to say I was the first to tell Garvey about it (on Twitter), and I think he was very disappointed that Elbow had not been approached. It is quite a startling omission.
