The Sunday Times had TSSK as its 15th best (rock and pop) Album of the year

Quote "To be honest it's no better than their earlier albums, but - for whatever reason - this was
the year when Elbow's thoroughly human take on rock finally reached the tipping point and deservedly
turned them from 'criminally underrated' to 'much loved'"

I think TSSK is ever so slightly up there for me, it's the best Very Happy

As for the NME... at least it was number 17; better than Bloc Party's record which was only 49 o_O

yes but bloc party have now gone shit jonny.

silent alarm was a masterpiece of an album. but after that theyve slowly declined into a bunch of scene, arrogant, people-pleasing, twats.

as pete turner said on jools holland. "weve always written music that we want to hear, instead os following the latest trends and stuff"

NME has been a waste of newsprint for at least 15 years. I don't say that as an Elbow fan, I say that as a music fan. Admittedly, a middle aged, curmudgeonly music fan, but nevertheless.... Smile. The glory days of Maconie/Collins and Quantick have long passed.

I stopped buying the NME long, long ago because I got sick of their set-'em-up-and-knock-'em-down style of journalism - "We hate it when our friends become successful" should be their motto. I also got sick of them taking the p1ss by constantly championing whatever trendy indie sludge had just crawled out of Camden. I want to know what good, new music is coming through, not read the opinions of a bunch of London-centric twunts who are just plugging their mates bands. So, as I moved out of my twenties and into my thirties, I switched to "Vox" and "Select" as my music mags.

These days, I know what demographic I'm in...I now take "Uncut" and "Q". How middle-aged is that?

No doubt, when I get to my 50's, I'll be sat in the doctor's waiting room reading "Mojo" with all the other dodders. Very Happy

Erm... Don't know about the UK but certainly here in Ireland there was very little coverage of the boys winning the Brit.
Lots of Duffy, lots of Girls Aloud and U2 but no Elbow... Mad

Most of the coverage seems to have focused on the fact that Coldplay won nothing. Why do the press have to be so negative?

Mmm. It's a real 'We'll take you guys down a peg or two!' attitude. Typical!

The press needs to build them up first before they can knock them back down. Only U2 and Saint Bono seem to be immune (so far).

Agreed. Even though they won what should really be the most prestigious award in "Best Band", they were virtually ignored in the tabloids the next day.

Hi backatcha, ChrissyBoy! Smile

I've had a few discussions (some would say "arguments", but whatever) with a friend about this Duffy business. She and I both agree that Duffy didn't deserve the Album award, but my friend thinks it's Radiohead who got screwed, not Elbow. Can't say I agree! No

All this week the Guardian are running a supplement listing 1,000 songs everyone should hear. Saturday was songs about 'Love' and included 'One Day Like This'...
The Guardian wrote:
The Bury band are better known for melancolic and bittersweet tales of loss than unadulterated love songs. But on the lead single from the Mercury-winning Seldom Seen Kid, Guy Garvey is even caught unawares himself at the sunshine of his love: “What made me behave this way, using words I never say?” he asks. “I can only think it must be love.” Over the strings that soundtracked the summer of 2008, the singalong coda exclaims: “Throw those windows wide, one day like this a year would see me right.”
Sunday was songs about 'Heartbreak'. Elbow were included again for 'My Very Best'...
The Guardian wrote:
One of the standout tracks from Elbow’s third album, Leaders of the Free World, in which Guy Garvey mulls over the disintegration of a long-distance relationship. Backed by sweeping strings, he graciously asks the listener to “give that girl my very best” but tell her “not to talk as if I died, though a tiny part just did”. Ultimately, he acknowledges that “of the love we should say this, there were switches never flicked”.
