I don't like most Rap because of their chauvinistic behavior. (Tits, cars and guns)
But I must admid that I could laugh my ass off on Eminem/D12 "My Band" or a lot stuff by Outkast, especially their videos..."Miss Jackson" is just too cute with the talking owl and the pianoplaying dog... Laughing
And somehow I liked Tone Loc because he was not such a serious gangstermoron like the most other rappers even when he talked about sex.... What a Face

OutKast are my favourite rap group because their so diverse, and carry very little of the behavior you refer to, TL. The best hip hop artists are nearly always the least chauvinistic.

I used to love hip hop and rap 20-odd years ago, but OutKast are the only hip hop group I really bother with these days. I do like some of the UK stuff like Dizzee Rascal though - in fact I even did an Elbow/Dizzee mashup - on my "Elbow bootlegs/mashups" thread from a few months ago.

And yeah, Tone Loc was funny - the bit in "Funky Cold Medina" about his dog "doing the wild thing on his leg" gets me every time.

Leo - you haven't really said WHY you hate rap, but I'd advise anyone who wants an antidote to monotonous, misogynistic rap to check out the De La Soul album "Three Feet High And Rising" - almost 20 years old but it sounds like a bunch of mates mucking around in the studio having fun while producing serious music - a bit like a hip-hop version of Elbow in fact!

Yeah, that album is superb! A very clever album by quirky, funloving blokes. Smile

LEE: I hate rap, hippity-hopperty, pop, and all music like that - because its almost always talentless and mass-produced. We hear that Elbo entirely self produced their last two albums - which are off extremely high quality etc etc... As soon as any Missy rascal or Dizzy Dynamite want a new song, they go to a bloke, ask him to write it, produce it, record it, and stick their face(s) on the single cover - and the annoying thing is - it IMMEDIATELY goes to the top of the charts. Now, Ive always been one to ignore the charts, and embrace the diverse, but i find it abscene that such artists can churn out whatever they like, and it will be guaranteed to go to the top of the charts. It could be the worst song EVER, yet, because of the name, brand, merchandise, label, kudos, cultural prescense etc etc of that "artist" (ridiculously named 'artist'), they go - without fail - to the top of the charts, and into the money making public eye. This must be crushing for a band like the elbow of, say, 3 or 4 years ago. They are/were creating this wonderful music, making it themselves, producing it themselves, arranging different parts, getting what THEY want out of it. And if we look on wikipedia, we see that before SSK, elbows highest singles chart placing was 19 - with coming secong - hardly a media orientated song, compared to forget myself for example.

i suppose Ricky Gervais best illustrated my point - in his TV show, Extras. His character wants somethin to be remembered in years to come. So what if it sells and sells, and it gets the highest ratings. He wants to get something out of it for himself - not money, but satisfaxction, in his creation.

We see these Dizzy people with millions and millions of pounds - are they happy???? Of course they are. Its down to the plain ignorance and stupidity of the british public. If we take my Gervais analogy again, its like Big Brother.

I suppose im going to get criticized now for having a rant about musical culture in general. So...

Rap music is just horrid anyway. Why is it all about doing things to each other - usually involving a knife, or unsafe sex?? I think its terrible, and extremely responsible for culture today - what with the stabbings or 'shankings' as they are ridiculously named by these 'bluds'.

I know im 16 and sound like an old man, but i really feel this way - and strongly about it. So, let me put some orchestral music on, and have a cup of tea - and reflect, upon these BASTARDS.

"The public gets what the public wants, but I want nothing the society gets" - The Jam... ... ... ... ...

Woah! What a poorly informed rant against hip hop. Have you ever listened to Dizzee Rascal (who appears to be your main target)?

Dizzee Rascal's Mercury winning debut album was written and produced by Dizzee Rascal, not "some bloke" he asked to do it.

Everything Dizzee Rascal releases "goes - without fail - to number one"? Dizzee Rascal has had just one number one - Dance Wiv Me - which incidentally is a great song.

How ironic that you finish your post with a Jam quote. Paul Weller has been selling music due to his name alone, rather than the quality, for many years.

dizzy twattock is not my main target. he was just the first of the ridiculously named hipperty hopperties to enter my aching head.

cant anybody realise that t isnt real, pure music. i think that the word im looking for is INTEGRITY. none of these artists have integrity, compassion or dignity - they just cant wait to cash that cheque and start "pimping some hoes'

i agree and concede that at a party dance music, hip hop etc etc is much better than radiohead or the like, but its still the dogs bollocks.

and yes, paul wellers solo stuff is a liitle lucrative due to reputation but a. it was A JAM QUOTE and b. what major band/artist doesnt. coldplays new album was always going to do well, it just so happens that is a great album. the kaiser cheifs forst album was really good, yet, their latest is rubbish - still selling?? OF COURSE

Theres a phrase often used in psychology - "correlation is not causation"

You're wrong but feel free to explain what I said that was "hypocritical".

Perhaps before starting a thread labeling a whole genre of music as "bollocks" you could take the time to listen to some or do some research. Perhaps if you did you'd realise that hip hop is probably the most exciting, ground breaking music genre around today. Scratch below the surface and you might be pleasantly suprised, I suspect you'll continue living in your bubble of ignorance tho.

I won't even start on the 'rap is responsible for all the countries ills' part of your post. Read the Daily Mail much?

I disagree that hip hop is the most exciting form of music, nor the most groundbreaking, but I don't feel it deserves the stereotypes that it has.. Now stop bickering and "hawd yer wheesht". (To quote Grant)

never. as its the biggest waste of paper in the world - behind postit notes and pizza delivery leaflets.

trust me, the secondary school i went to, there was a huge variation in rap, grime, hip hop etc etc that we had to listen to in lessons and the like.

now, i think we should stop being childish, agree to disagree, and shake hands Beer

Did you look over the "c(Rap)" thread that Misspelt linked? I think it covers most of the issues here. (Just a little less....angrily)
