I've just discovered this thread - will enjoy getting to know some Herbert Grönemeyer! I only know a few Geran bands from the late 70s/early 80s when I was over there for a few months - going back a bit and probably very uncool. Wink I particularly remember Nina Hagen, though haven't heard anything of hers for years, and an amazing single "Am Fenster" by a band called City - from Berlin, am I right TL? - with some brilliant fiddle playing a bit like Curved Air.

My favourite German band though is Ougenweide - sort of medieval folk-rock, which sounds dated perhaps but I still love them! Smile

Ah, yes, City! One of the best east german bands who not only were good instrumentalists but also had a good singer who did not sound too polished Smile
If you like medieval rock music you MIGHT like Subway to Sally, In Extremo and Corvus Corax.
More the classic folk and one of the few german folk bands that do not fit in the horrible "Musikantenstadl": Wacholder

I don't know anything by City except that single (it was on a mix tape a friend did me) - do you recommend an album?

I know Corvus Corax (and like them but can only listent o so much at a time...) but will check out the others - thanks! Another folk-rock LP I have from those days (but they seem to have vanished without trace now) is by a group called Falckenstein - beautifully described on the cover as "die Folk-Rock-Band des deutschen Folk-Revivals"!

I must admid that I own only one City Album (their first one with "Am Fenster" which is in its LP/CD-Version 17 minutes (!!) long) but the most tracks by City are more melodic rock or later a bit more electronic. I think their newer records are a bit retro again because the fiddle player Georgi Gorgow is in the band again.

Oh Boy. I am sooo predictable. Very Happy
Herbi again. Well, he released his new album yesterday and I'm watching a live Dvd now.

To be honest, many times I compare him with Guy when it's about lyrics. That's probably the reason why I like them both so much. I really should give it a try and translate one of his songs so that you finally know what I'm always talking about. Very Happy

Ok... so here's my translation from "dort und hier" (there and here)...
Surely it's not as lyric as it sounds in german but this song gives me goosebumps everytime I listen to it and considering that he wrote this for his deceased wife it's heartbreaking....

The night swallows every heavy weight
and takes the day from its duty
The moon stands steep and does nothing again
I close my eyes and think of you.

Is someone there when your wing breaks
someone who puts it in splints, who protects you
who watches you, carries you on clouds
counts stars for you, when you're asleep.

I try to programm a dream
and imagine you'd come to me
I should stop to strain my brain
you are there and I am here.

Is someone there when your wing breaks
someone who puts it in splints, who protects you
who watches you, carries you on clouds
counts stars for you, when you're asleep.

And here's another artist.
The band has been supporting act for Kylie Minogue and they were pretty good live.

They are called Frida Gold.

No Herbi this time! *LOL*

WHY am I posting all that??? These artists need to become famous on an international level!!!!!!!!!
Have fun!

First song is called "Feuer" (fire)... WOW!!! First I wasn't so sure about the "prodigy" part but now... It's so awesome (HAMMAAAAAA! Very Happy)
Marteria (the second rapper) is probably one of the best hip hop musicians at the moment. Love his very slow rap with his dark voice.

And than there is Max Buskohl... Another artist you wouldn't imagine he's from Germany. Smile

Most of my German music library consists of NDH bands-Rammstein, Oomph!, Megaherz, the like. I also listen to Seeed. (I'm rather fond of Peter Fox's solo album, "Stadtaffe." "Daz Zweite Gesicht" is a particular favorite.)
