Is this the right place for it?

His solo LP Courting The Squall will be released on 30 October

Mmm, interesting.

Heard one track, "Angela's Eyes" on Shaun Keaveny's show this morning. You can check it out here, on the main programme playback (The Vicky McClure one) at 1hr 43 in, along with an interview with Guy here via iPlayer.

Seems as though it's up on Spotify (I assume it's UK only right now), haven't had a chance to listen to it yet but I'm happy that we're getting new material this year from the boys.

You can pre-order there and receive it as a download according to his facebook page.

Playing my mp3 copy whilst looking out for the delivery man with my vinyl

Initial thoughts are that it's a very good album. I wish I'd got my act together a bit earlier and got tickets for the Manchester gigs now

Was listening to the album discussion he did on John Kennedy's X-Posure and it seems as though there's quite a bit going on with side-projects. Mark has a new band to play with (https://twitter.com/theplumedores) and Pete's aiming for a solo album himself.

As for the album, really enjoyed it. There's only one song that I haven't come around on just yet, everything else's beautiful. Some songs you can imagine with the boys or you hear a bit of their sound in the music.

by the sounds of things, the future is looking good for the music industy with the boys so busy on so many things, i saw on twitter that craig had just finished the mastering on steve mason's new effort that he produced for him...

guys effort has been on repeat all day here... like everything with him i need to warm to them first, the more up tempo stuff as always peeks my interest - the belly of the whale being the track that i like the most so far.

Only heard 'Angelas Eyes' as I sit hear, gonna buy the CD next week in anticipation of the Albert Hall gig ; from what I've read, appears to be 'a grower' ; no bad thing.

I am really enjoying it. The more upbeat numbers such as Angela's Eyes, Harder Edges and Belly of the Whale are a nice departure and feel very different.

Unwind and Courting the Squall are beautifully written slower numbers and Electricity is the most original, unoriginal, new, old - fashioned and sublime song there, and my personal favourite. The vocals from Jolie Holland are refreshingly old - fashioned and it is very 1930s jazz ballad. Smoky. Romantic. I love it.

Juggernaut is another excellent track. Whisperings of Elbow here and in Unwind.

Yesterday and Broken Bottles and Chandeliers will grow on me I am sure, as will the last very short track.

Well done Guy! Different enough to be worthwhile, but with tinges of similarity frequent enough for an Elbow fan to be convinced. :-)

PostSubject: Re: Guy Solo - Courting The Squall   Tue 10 Nov 2015, 12:43

Courting the Squall landed in my mailbox yesterday. I'd been manic waiting for it; last week's deadlines at the office were terrible, and it would have been nice to have.

I've listened to it three times now. Or is it four? And I've only had it in my hands for twelve hours, and that includes sleep.

Point is, I quite like this.

Sonically, it's quite different than Elbow and where they are today. That goes without saying. (I really had this thought -- "You can tell that's not Jupp on the drum kit.") Yet, it's not difficult to get an Elbow-ish vibe from it simply due to Guy's voice, and some of the songs I could almost mistake for deep cuts from the Asleep in the Back or Cast of Thousands eras. (I do wonder how the band would handle the title track or "Unwind" live. May not happen, but you never know.)

Nothing's quite grabbed me as emotionally as "This Blue World" or "My Sad Captains" did off Take-Off, and I'm okay with that. Courting doesn't seem quite as... polished, and I don't think it's trying to be. It's just a pleasant forty minutes with Garvey, and that works for me.

Five plays in and I'm loving the new album. I wasn't sure initially with first release, Angela's Eyes but this track is now growing on me. Love Juggernaut, Unwind and title track. Can't believe I delayed buying the album, how could I ever doubt Guy Garvey. Interested to hear Pete's new venture on a new solo album. Lots going on!

Booked tickets this morning to see Guy at Birmingham, looking forward!
