Such a lovely tune.

Does anybody consider this part of the Tssk canon (since it was released as a UK exclusive)? I'm so used to playing the album without it that it feels to me almost like a b-side to the LP itself.

Also - does anybody know where a yank like myself might be able to get a file of Friend of Ours with the track length as 5:01? (With the 20 odd extra seconds). I want to listen through the whole album as elbow intended it, but being in the US, I haven't been able to find any version of Friend of Ours barring the common length of 4:38..

The extra time is a pause track of silence - it counts down for 24 seconds to separate We're Away from the rest of the album, so if you want the UK listening experience just wait a bit before listening to it.

If you want to listen to the album as elbow 'originally' intended, seek out the 5:19 version of Starlings from the TSSK promo, which has a 15 second 'freakout' at the beginning.  It was removed for the released version because ultimately they decided they didn't like it.

I'm fully aware it's 20 odd seconds of silence - I've just had zero luck in finding the longer track. Kinda doubt I can find the extra bit in Starlings either.

You could easily add the required time in an audio editor...

Strictly speaking it's not part of the track though - the reason there are 5-minute versions of Friend Of Ours floating around is because most cd ripping software appends gaps/pauses to the previous track - according to EAC Friend Of Ours is 4:36.37 with a 24.58 second gap to We're Away.

From what I've read, the UK release of tssk itself includes an extra 23 seconds to Friend of Ours, while the other generalized releases have it at just 4:38 - but you're definitely right about the gaps being added on.

Would you recommend any specific software for editting on the gap? I'm not too savvy with this sort of thing

You could use Audacity to create a 24.58 second silent track. Takes about three seconds to do so. Smile

Then, make a playlist, and put the silent track between "Friend of Ours" and "We're Away."

Ah! Clever. I should have known Audacity was the answer. It always is.
