As Bennington said, 'NLR', within the context of the album and with it being 5 minutes, is really getting the Thumbs Up! from me - the only one so far, not connecting with me, 'Reprise' apart, is 'High Ideals', I think it was mentioned earlier about it being better if possibly an instrumental, and I can certainly get that, because the music is lovely, if that doesn't sound too trite.

Am getting there with 'The River' aswell...........it's a great piece of work for sure - definitely an album 'for Elbow fans' - I don't think it's gonna attract many new listeners like TSSK did though, clearly from interviews recently, that isn't something that bothers the band.

My fears about a disappointing LP, thankfully, have proved unfounded !

I'm being a fickle beast with this record! Open Arms is now in my heart. I was so harsh about it to begin with but it's just gorgeous really.

Conversely, The Night Will Always Win has worn off... not sure why. Sad it's a good song but not an album highlight and it's odd because I love the melancholia Elbow wades in... I think perhaps it is just a bit out of place on an album that while very touching and tearjerking at times, is otherwise quite a light, positive, joyous affair.

So far, this is my order from best to still-bloody-good-cos-it's-elbow-after-all-duh!

1. Lippy Kids (beyond words - the epitome of exemplary songwriting).
2. The Birds (and its reprise...it works for me- the main song is the best opener yet IMO and is at 8 minutes, a mini-epic of which the boys should be thoroughly proud. Stunning!)
3. Dear Friends (God, it's beautiful).
4. Neat Little Rows (more feelgood than ODLT or even Forget Myself? I ADORE the longer album version, absolutely exhilarating!)
5. With Love
6. Jesus is a Rochdale Girl
7. The River
8. Open Arms
9. High Ideals
10. The Night Will Always Win

Going on this, I think it's an album that starts brilliantly, dips a little in the middle, and ends just beautifully.

Brilliant album!

My order:

1.) Lippy kids - The sort of emotion only Elbow can bring. The Hall Choir adds a lot to the song, I really like it's contribution.
2.) The birds - Epic. The final is breathtaking.
3.) Dear friends - Again, emotional stuff in such a good way. The sort of Elbow song that reminds me why I'm a fan.
4.) The river - Gorgeous!
5.) High ideals - The rhythm, the strings, the melody, ... great!
6.) The night will always win - Simply beaufitul.
7.) With love - A bit of soul added in the song. Great vocal work when the choir and all the backings sing together.
8.) Jesus is a Rochdale girl - Beautiful in it's simplicity.
9.) Open arms - Bigger venues? The chorus is a little to 'big' for me.
10.) Neat little rows - Live it will be great but in the whole of the album it's my least favourite.

Completely agree with Garvey about SSK being a "grander" record. It's very mature, very adult... I think BARB has this in places but it definitely is a rougher-round-the-edges affair. It's proggier, less sweeping, more upbeat.... a mix of the first three mainly, especially Leaders I think.

Do you have an RSS reader, Lucky? If you do, add this URL: http://network.absoluteradio.co.uk/core/podcasts/rss.php?meta=52

That will add the feed for Absolute Radio's occasional Elbow podcast, and you'll get links to the mp3s. Smile

I think its quite funny that some people really like particular songs
while they are others least favourites. Shows a diversity to elbow perhaps between maybe
the softer side and heavier. Me i like a bit of both - and we always get that on an elbow album.
But i can see where you can get a split on certain tracks, kind of emphasises the old Grace Under Pressure debate -where some rave about it and others (me included) don't align as strongly with.

I guess there is that multi faceted aspect to elbow that allows them to produce great music with variation - and i guess thats ultimately why i probably love them so much.

I haven't examined the lyrics in great detail yet, (will pick over them later) just enjoying the 'listen' for now, but picking up some real emotional connections along the way.

Lippy Kids jumped out at me today - taking me back to that change from boy to teenager - "Nobody knows me at home anymore" and the start of my own adult life itself, with all the mistakes i made just waiting to happen again. The ones that I suppose eventually made me the person I am today. Always seemed to learn the hard way. ....and the piano at the end hit me.

Have listened a couple of times via we7 but only just got round to buying and listening on headphones.

First thoughts:

The Birds - loved it straight away, it's the type of Elbow song I love the most. Bitter-sweet, uplifting yet tinged with melancholy, in the same vein as My Very Best, The Stops, Tower Crane, The Bones Of You, but more so, because it's track 1, which means EPIC.

Agree with whoever it was further up the thread (sorry can't remember who) that this is the best Elbow album opener.

That bit at 5 minutes in when the strings come in and Guy's vocals - just fucking overwhelming goosebump city.

Keep coming back to it.

Lippy Kids - Love this in a different way, it didn't affect me as much musically but more so lyrically, I'm looking back on my own teenage years but also looking at my kids and wondering what it'll be like for them (my 5-year-old has already perfected a simian stroll!)

With Love - wasn't sure at first, the spoken/shouted "with love" bit grated on me a bit but the second half of the song ("love will find you out") has won me over.

Neat Little Rows - weird time signature, funny song structure, and that's why I love Elbow. That chorus has been stuck in my head for weeks now. The "extra bit" sounds like it's always been there and it'll sound weird hearing the radio edit now. I haven't the faintest idea what the song's about (even after reading the lyrics).

Jesus Is A Rochdale Girl and The Night Will Always Win - hmmm, growers perhaps, there were a few like that on TSSK that won me over in the end.

High Ideals - lovely piano from Craig and the tune took a few surprising twists and turns. One of the highlights for me.

The River - another grower maybe, nice melody.

Open Arms - the album's singalong, not my favourite but prefer it to ODLT.

The Birds (reprise) - I found it incredibly poignant to hear this song in an old man's voice. Only comparison I can think of is Hurt by Johnny Cash.

Dear Friends - classic Elbow, musical chicken soup that would've fitted in on any of the last five albums.

Other than Lippy Kids I haven't really listened too closely to the lyrics, the music always comes first for me, I'm just enjoying the album as a whole Smile

listening again, Open Arms is growing on me fast.

Musically, High Ideals reminds me of Ravel's Bolero for some reason.

Only two songs I'm not sure about yet are "Jesus" and "The Night". I'll give them time...

The Birds (reprise) makes me well up, I don't know why. Dear Friends is a lovely ending to the album.

Favourite tracks in order, it'll be interesting to see how this changes in a few months:

The Birds
Lippy Kids
Neat Little Rows
Dear Friends
High Ideals
Open Arms
The Birds (Reprise)
With Love
The River

PostSubject: build a rocket boys! song meanings (and slight review/lyric discussion)   Fri 11 Mar 2011, 11:34

Edit: My first post, hello! Smile

Firstly, I'm very much in love with this album at the moment. One of the biggest attractions is the gorgeous lyrics, which I've been trying to decypher. I've pieced together the meanings of most of the songs (I think) from the lyrics and listening to some interviews, so here's my interpretation. I'd love some discussion, especially on those which I have no idea, thanks!:

The Birds: The most interesting for me right now. So this song can clearly be seen in three parts. In the first, an old man sitting in a care-home is remembering his last passionate experience with a certain young lady in his youth, the birds their audience 'keeping their secret'. In the second part, he's then harassed by the staff, telling him he's always telling this tale, and trying to take him inside. In the third, it seems to me he doesn't just go along with them this time, and fights back, singing more passionately this time about his memories, the overlapping vocals of the staff and the man seem to indicate this struggle.

Lippy kids: Well everyone knows this one. I heard on a bbc6 interview Guy saying that his inspiration was seeing some 'lippy kids' on a corner, being tempted to cross over the road, then remembering his youth was exactly the same. I interpret 'You were a freshly painted angel, Walking on walls' as being about some girl he remembers.

With love: I don't have many ideas on this, seems like maybe he's with a girl who has a boyfriend, but maybe he thinks she really loves him? Not sure.

Neat little rows: Also, not too sure. I'm fairly sure I heard on an interview that it's about someone coming home, but I can't find much that makes sense to me in the lyrics.

Jesus is a Rochdale Girl: In Q they said this was Guy remembering a time before any sort of fame, evident in the gorgeous line 'And nothing to be proud of, and nothing to regret'. I have no idea what the title means, anyone?

The night will always win: I think everyone knows this one too? In several interviews Guy has said it's about his old friend we know, and specifically about him staying up into the night drinking and thinking about him. 'I miss your stupid face, I miss your bad advice' Ahhhhhh

High ideals: One of the best elbow lyrics I've ever heard sums this song up for me 'And any noble fire that was burning in my chest, Is acid in my belly at the very best'. It's about his lost ideals of youth, etc. A lot of the lyrics I can't understand however, the bayonnet stuff, and I'd like to understand the settle down little heart of mine section if anyone has any ideas.

The river: Absolutely loving this song having looked into the lyrics. A drunken man walks alongside a river and tells it all his troubles, finding it a good listener. Really paints the scene well i think.

Open arms: I don't think any song has ever made me smile so much. The lyrics might be cheesy if we didn't know how absolutely honestly they were delivered. The chorus sums it up, which I interpret as a family singing to their son, having suffered a recent breakup to come home to his family. 'Everyone's here', oh god it's so lovely!

The birds (reprise): the insert to the album tells me about the man who i presume is singing. I didn't like this so much at first, but understanding the birds better has made me appreciate this a bit more.

Dear friends: This one seems easy to understand on the face of it, but I don't quite get the specifics. He's far away from home, drinking in a bar i think, and thinking of his friends?

So any help in dissecting the ones I don't understand would be great, and I hope I've pointed out a couple of things maybe some people didn't know Smile

With love!

The album gets better after each listen.

IMO, the first two tracks are just so good, it kinda makes the rest seem inferior.

However, this is just relative , there are still great songs throughout

At first I was not too keen on the sing-along "With Love" and "Open Arms" . Seemed a bit trite . But they are growing on me.

The band have stayed true to themselves and still delivered another great record !

Given the album constant playing this week...

The Birds is just amazing. Perhaps, the best ever Elbow track and certainly the best new song i have heard period for years. Sublime. Spine Tingling.

Lippy Kids is classic Elbow love it. Beautiful song.

The rest of the album is very good in places but can't match the brilliance of the first two songs which are on another level.

Neat Little Rows, The Night Will Always Win, High Ideals, Dear Friends, Jesus Is A Rochdale Girl, The Birds (reprise) are all strong songs. (Although if honest, i prefer single edited version of 'Neat Little Rows')

My least favourite tracks are 'With Love', 'River' & 'Open Arms'.

I dont like the Garvey falsetto vocal on 'With Love' at all (almost sounds out of tune at times) but its an ok song. 'River' again is ok but sounds more like a b-side while 'Open Arms' seems too obvious attempt to replicate 'One Day Like This' in its sing-along chours. It sounds forced to me and doesn't quite work.

In summary i agree with most of the reviews out there, an 8 out of 10, 4 stars out of 5 album with some of Elbow's best ever moments. But not quite their best album.

Hi mouxlaloulouda,

That article has already been posted here http://elbow.heavenforum.org/t1281-shortlist-article-by-guy-garvey

It isn't directly related to BARB either, so please try to stay on topic.

Thanks,

MT
