PostSubject: An American in Rome...   Thu 12 Aug 2010, 10:47

First of all, hello to all Elbow people. I haven't posted for a while but have kept an eye on the site.
Just wanted to share the following.
Whilst on holiday recently in Rome, my wife and I got friendly with a lovely couple from Philadelphia in their 60's: she an English lecturer, he a professor of immunology.
One night at dinner, we got talking about music; she was fascinated and was eager to learn about my musical taste; he said that he had no interest in music since the 1960's and recalled a Dion & The Belmonts gig as his last experience.
What followed from Jay (the gentleman) nearly made me choke on my chianti.
"Hey Joe, I was watching the tube the other night and a programme came on about Abbey Road and this band called Elbow were playing. They were great. I recorded it on my digital player and when the grand kids came round I sat them down and made them watch it. I really like the tune about doin' something with the curtains and opening them...it was a really moving tune"
Looking at this fiercly intelligent, humble and Jimmy Stewart-like man, I realised why Elbow are my favourite band. They have the ability to reach out and touch the soul of (I think) everybody. Long may they continue to touch everyone with their music.

Regards,
Joe

Hi Joe! Very Happy That was a great little anecdote! The gent you met sounds like my dad - he's in his mid-sixties and was/is a big Dion fan (actually, he is good with anything Elvis or doo-wop related, and any rock made after that era is "crap", in his sage opinion). I have never actually played him any Elbow...wonder if he can be converted as well! I might have to give it a try next time I visit him!

Life affirming: yes!
Thanks Chrissie! Still use your glasses to have a relaxing G&T. (However, they have to be 'liberated' from our daughters' bedrooms as they have taken a shine to them!)
