This could either be very contentious (the whole Fish/Steve Hogarth thing) or bells will sonorously toll a death knell and the tumbleweed will blow slowly through this small corner of the forum as I sit here alone with one of my favourite bands.

Marillion

With Fish - Script for a Jester's Tear and Clutching at Straws

With Steve Hogarth - Anoraknophobia, Marbles (the 2 cd version), Brave

Marillion.com, Season's End and Radiation - slightly patchier but with some wonderful stuff as well.

Just me????

I'm afraid I never really got into them, despite a sustained campaign of Script for a Jester's Tear by a mate ages ago...

But tumbleweed is a horrible thing... Smile

Right... as an Elbow fan, I am constantly being told I should listen to Doves.

As a huge Genesis fan, I am constantly being told I should listen to Marillion.

I haven't done either yet. But in fact, I do plan to get me some Marillion... but only once I've made my way there.

My mate used to try to force-feed me them when I was going through an acid house phase in my teens, so I never really got into them. Quite liked the odd hits they had, but that's about it.

I used to listen to Marillion a lot in the '80s, at the same time as discovering '70s Genesis. I kind of rediscovered Genesis after forgetting about them for quite a while, and really got back into them in about 2003.

I decided to try Marillion again, all the Fish-era stuff that I used to listen to, and found it awful, frankly. Sounded really dated to me, and I decided that I hate Fish's voice.

Then someone on the Genesis forum made me aware of a B-side Marillion did called Grendel, did anyone hear this? If you are familiar with Supper's Ready by Genesis you'll find it hilarious. Basically, it's "Apocalypse in 9/8", but done in 4/4!

Never heard the later stuff but heard good reports, wouldn't really know where to start now. I never thought they sounded like Genesis anyway, despite others insisting they did.

Fair enough. It took me a while to like his voice too but I really like some of that early stuff. Clutching at Straws is a really good album.

Indeed. It's dire isn't it. Very Happy

See my first post for some suggestions if you wish to investigate. Don't worry, I won't be offended if you don't Smile . BTW don't go near the latest album 'Somewhere Else'. It's really crap. And it may be best to beg steal or borrow before making any commitments to them. They're definitely not to everyone's taste. Musical Marmite if you will.....not to mention just about the most uncool band in existence.

My Scottish husband is a big Marillion/Fish fan, and was listening to a Fish live acoustic performance last night. My daughter walked into the room, listened for a few seconds, then asked, "Oh my God, Dad, why are you listening to smooth jazz? " Laughing

Marillion - saw them live at the Ipswich Gaumont about the time of "Script..". I quite liked Market Square Heroes - in fact I still do, despite sounding very 80's now (although lyrically rather relevant now). The album does sound, to these ears, pretty duff I'm afraid. And Grendel - ugh!
They were quite good live, although totally blown away by their supporting act - one Peter Hammill, who with just tape machine, guitar, e-bow and that voice, blew me away.

The album I heartily recommend is Afraid Of Sunlight.

I guarantee as an Elbow fan, the track 'Beyond You' will blow your socks off.

Now that Marillion have released 15+ studio albums, parents have more choice:

kayleigh, Angelina, Nina, Cinderella, Torch,... Laughing

My daughter was called Kayleigh for almost 5 months until I found something which my wife would accept as being "nearly" as good. Fortunately, I hit on Adele about 2 weeks before she was born :-)

Marillion seemed to live in Manchester during late 1981 and early 1982 and we used to go see them about once a month. Sometimes I'll break out Script when I'm feeling nostalgic but it is definitely music of it's time.
