PostSubject: Obscure indie folkstress Rozi Plain's full band set shock horror! Better than Elbow?   Mon 12 Apr 2010, 05:58

Her stuff on the web makes it seem that she is some twee folk singer. In actual fact, particularly with her full band set, she could slaughter the Bunnymen at their best, The Beatles, Radiohead, U2, REM, David Bowie, Elbow, The Chameleons UK, Joy Division, Siouxie and the Banshees, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Lady Gaga, The Doors, Queen and The Velvet Underground! She is without any doubt the greatest rock performer in history, and has increased her powers at an exponential rate, a bit like the grade five mutant in the X-Men.
Anyone attending her concert will not only have their life changed but require therapy for the shock afterwards. I know this sounds an astoundingly improbable statement. In fact I must apologise for not going far enough. Don't get me wrong, I love Elbow and The Chameleons UK were the rod I measured other performers with. After Echo & the Bunnymen's decline I never thought anything would come close. But I was wrong. Rozi is now reaching such stratospheric heights, there is absolutely no band in history that can touch her-and you can see her at small venues or even pubs rather than stadiums! Her new album is going to be the greatest album ever made. Catch her while you can.
If anyone doubts me (and I can't blame you) private message me and I will invite you to my home and show you high definition videos I have made of her and other great new performers such as Adelaide's Cape, Uncle Jellyfish, Francois & the Atlas Mountains and Rachael Dadd/Kate Stables (Whalebone Polly) but my film of Rozi's full band set in Blackburn at the Cellar Bar, 41 King Street will blow your minds and make you her slave for life. Because she is the saviour of rock. I have not you-tubed these performances, I want them put on television-Francois record is not bad, but my video is better. Uncle Jellyfish are very powerful live, but their CD is lacking something- whereas my film, even as just an audio recording alone, is fabulous. Rachael, Rozi and Kate's Cd's are great, but my film even trumps these excellent recordings, though there are still one or two classic songs I have yet to film, such as Rachael Dadd's "Ships" and "Finger on the Button" along with Rozi Plain's "Rook Rook Crow" and "Common Ears"-even though her new songs are even better, I want to film the lot. Obviously, I have all their records/CDs and got permission to film and give them Blu-Rays of their performances.
Is there any chance Elbow could use Rozi as an opening act? Though she might end up headlining!
The HD movies with high quality Dolby sound, recorded on professional equipment, are in my opinion, more valuable than early footage of The Beatles or The Velvet Underground. If Guy and co want to come round and see it, that's fine by me-after speaking to Rozi I can't be made shy or intimidated by any other God-like genius superstar.
P.S. I am not her manager, just an obsessed fan, and there will soon be a lot more like me.

Have you tried yet to recommend her to Guy on his radioshow?

Wow, you don't get a much of that brand of devotion to the pound. Gotta be worth investigating...

She's playing in Bristol in a few weeks - might give her a go.

One note of caution. Solo, she is "only" as great as Elbow-still well worth seeing. When she is combined with the men in her "full band set" the whole becomes more than the sum of the parts, and she becomes absolute dynamite-and no band in history can match her. The trouble is, you have to wait a while to see her full band sets-I had to go all the way from Hampshire to Blackburn to film a full band set. It was worth it. I wish she would always play with her full band. If Guy Garvey went solo, I'm sure he would be a great act, but not as great as with his "full band."

I loved the Bunnymen. Believe me, this is not a glib comment. If Nick Drake was alive, he could be her support act.

kinda reminds me on Jesca Hoop, solo she's a nice singer songwriter but with band you can not pigeonhole her anymore...

The first time I saw the light was during a pretty miserable period in my life. I was watching the Culture Show and there was this hushed silence and I thought "something big is about to happen" and these amiable and beardy (and one baldy) men were giving an interview, so I switched on the hard drive recorder and the three men known as The Fence Collective sang a song called "Tortoise Regrets Hare" but what impressed me most was the beautiful girl with the stunning voice and incredibly sensitive, compassionate delivery. This was no session singer-I just knew she was special, it was the most exciting thing since I'd first heard Echo & The Bunnymen on John Peel. The shy girl didn't get a look in on the interview, when I found out her name and saw her show in Bristol I was blown away, and wrote such an enthusiastic review on the Fence Records website that the management asked if I was some kind of stalker! But in reality I am obsessed with what she becomes on stage-she is just a normal if charming/level headed human being off stage, a bit like Guy-though obviously not as butch!
At every show, she just got better and better. The shy girl had transformed into a tiger-I think she knows the effect she has on people now.

I'm not seeing much on the general youtube stuff, like you said.
Guess i'll have to wait to hear some of the full band set, to get the vibe you are putting across.

That is the understatement of the century-her web profile is a disgrace-but as a vibrant young girl rather than a nerd, I guess she has better things to do than spend all her time at a computer raising her profile. But the trouble is, I don't want to put the films I have made on YouTube.
Her first EP and LP's show flashes of early genius, but even these songs have been worked on live and matured into stunning material that deserves re-recording it's so much better-which is what I have done in effect, because the Dolby 5.1 microphones on my camera exceed studio quality even from a technical viewpoint, never mind the utter brilliance of her recent full band shows. As for the new songs, they are like a quantum leap in quality.
If I you-tubed it, effectively giving away a great live re-master of her earlier work and leaking a classic future (and as yet unnamed) album I would be doing her no favours, I want her to make money out of this film. Never mind a video, if it was released as just a live audio CD it would top the charts.
So perhaps I should make a compilation of short, incomplete highlights of her best live performances, about two or three minutes long.
On the other hand, perhaps I should shut up about her. I had to wait in the cold for more than an hour to see the great Karen O and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and even when I got to the front there were too many security people and press beyond the barrier for my liking-she put on a great performance by the way, but if people find out Rozi is even better than Karen O she might end up in stadiums, which short changes the fans. I don't want to end up camping outside to get to the front. A bit like when the Bunnymen were relegated to to the intimate Brighton Concorde II during the "Flowers" tour and put on possibly one of their greatest shows ever, a bit like getting to see a superior version of Radiohead or U2 at the end of the pier show! They actually brought tears to my eyes. But even at their greatest shows, I have always been too hung up and mature to actually scream. When I watched my video of Rozi in Blackburn, I did actually scream at one point. I thought only teenage girls did that.
I am seriously considering blowing all my savings on hiring Red One cameras and a film crew to make a UHDTV 3D movie of her and all the other acts to actually put in cinemas-it would be better than U2's Zoo Tv or the film of the Velvet Undergrounds reunion tour. But perhaps when I send the DVDs and Blu-Rays up to the BBC they will do it all for me and save me the time and money. I am rather busy on a device that predicts future crime and natural disasters, not to mention the stock market. But saving the world can wait until I have revealed video evidence of this girls greatness-and her boyfriend Francois (of the Atlas Mountains) is just as cool incidentally, at least live. The vibe between the two of them when they play together on my films was incredible, like sparks of electricity-or perhaps lovetricity. Imagine if Sonny and Cher were suddenly given superhuman musical ability. And at the Blackburn show, Rozi (quite rightly) said that Uncle Jellyfish (vastly superior on my film compared to their studio album) were "one hell of an act to follow"-they were fantastic-but of course, she surpassed herself, and even them in response. Both Francois and the Atlas Mountains and Uncle Jellyfish are from France, and have changed my view that only English music is best-when they tour, check them out. More fun than the Scissor Sisters and Deacon Blue combined, but with powerful African rhythms better and deeper than Tinariwain (cant be bothered to check the spelling on that) but once again, very poor profile on the web, and unlike Rozi, the CDs aren't as good as the live shows-Francois is merely OK and Uncle Jellyfish have very poor production-perhaps they freeze up in the studio. Little did they know that my magic camera was a secret studio that sucked in their very essence! If they don't release this as a DVD/Blu-Ray, bearing in mind that I am charging them nothing, then they will be insane. I've been a bit busy sorting days worth of video and laboriously copying/down-converting it to standard definition DVD and later High Definition Blu-Ray when I get a burner (the local shop has lost patience with me regarding the use their Blu-ray recorder) but rather than buy more video editing software and a Blu-ray burner, I was thinking of getting (1) a proper movie crew for a film or (2) a series of Blu-ray/DVD recorders and filming/burning disks of live shows for sale right after the act. In the case of the acts I have mentioned, this would be free, and they would get all the sales profits, but for other bands this might work as a commercial business. I can afford to do one or the other, but not both. Until the predictor can beat the lotto rather than just on-line casinos at a penny every minute that is. (I have found a neat loophole in Einstein's prohibition on superluminal signalling.) I think a cinema film might be more likely to get these people (Rachael Dadd as well) the super-stardom they so richly deserve.
I have some screen captures of my previous films of Whalebone Polly, Rachael Dadd and Rozi Plain on my fine art site. http://www.imagekind.com/MemberProfile.aspx?MID=4444bdf8-8720-467e-975d-dc543f271aad
p.s if I do get round to making a cinema film, I might bribe Rozi and her band do a cover of The Chameleons "Dangerous Land" and the Noel Burke era Bunnymen's "Flaming Red" because no other band would be great enough to do it.
