*sigh* Another one bites the dust. Mark Linkous, best known as head of indie outfit Sparklehorse, has committed suicide, aged 47. Unfortunately, it isn't as if this is a total shock. He was not a shiny, happy person. His music was fantastic, but sometimes incredibly difficult to listen to. Like Elliot Smith or Kurt Cobain, you can hear that the pain in the songs was for real. That's why Sparklehorse and Nirvana never stayed in heavy rotation on my stereo; I respected and appreciated the music they made, but it almost felt overwhelming to listen to sometimes, and it felt uncomfortable, as if I was bearing witness to the very intimate suffering of a person I'd never met. But God bless 'em for sharing their lives with the world through their music, as I know they touched many (and maybe even comforted or helped many) by doing so.

I had been looking forward to the release of a collaborative album with Sparklehorse and DJ Dangermouse, along with a host of other artists (Dark Side of the Soul). It had been on hold for ages due to industry bullshit, but I think it is close to being released at last, albeit too late for Linkous to see it. It'll make a fine epitaph for a fine musician.

Here are a few Sparklehorse tunes for those who want to give them a listen, including a really cool one with the Flaming Lips which is part of the Dark Side of the Soul project.

I's a sad and beautiful world indeed, a massive loss, I adored his music.

It is always sad when someone is so desperate that ending their life seems a viable option. Such a shame.

That Dangermouse/Sparklehouse track is bloody brilliant, and lyrically very strong.

RIP

Sad news indeed

I'll dig out my copy of "Good Morning Spider" when I get home tonight. I never quite got into the album although in parts it was beautiful.

From what I've read over the years Mark seemed to be a troubled soul, may he rest in peace

From my favourite Sparklehorse track, "More Yellow Birds" on the album "It's A Wonderful Life":

"Will my pony recognise my voice in hell?
Will he still be blind, or do they go by smell?"

More sad, strange and beautiful music silenced forever.

RIP Mark Linkous.
