I swear there was a Vampire Weekend thread back in the day?

I reckon their new album, Contra, is better than their brilliant self titled debut.

Discuss.

I always sit down to compare debut to second albums and find it difficult. Debuts are filled with songs that the band has played, voiced and loved for years. So I gave up and just take each individual LP for what it is.

Contra makes me want to dance, still has the afro-Caribbean rhythm that is so infectious. You definitely need to give it some time to grow, whoever has produced it (runs for cd cover) has done a damn fine job and I think Chris is a very underrated bass player.

I am off to listen again, it's on rotate with Delphic.

I thought we had a VW thread once before, as well... scratch

Anyway, I do like the new disc very much, but I don't know if I love it the same way I loved the debut. I haven't listened to it enough yet for it to grow on me the same way as the first, so I will see how I feel about it in another month or so. But it is quite good!

It took a few listens but now I'm really liking Contra. But then I like Graceland.

OK, cheap shot (which does them an injustice) but you know what I mean.

I also like the fact that they put quality before quantity.

I really like the new song. Might have a dabble as i didn't get their first one, although i was aware of the african / graceland comparisons.

also really enjoying this at the moment, in fact i don't know why i didn't buy the first one because having listened to that again, i really liked the singles.

One or two tracks border on the monotonous, but it is very catchy, rhythmic.

OK, I've listened to Contra a handful more times and it has definitely grown on me. I liked it fine the first time, but the more I listen to it the more I enjoy it. It is way catchy and rhythmic, as ChrissyBoy pointed out, but it's also a bit more introspective, in places, than the first album was and I'm liking the added depth. Hope they will come around here when they're touring it - they'd be a fun show to see, no doubt!
